5:01 Jazz: The Doug Horn Trio At Rush Street Tonight

WEMU is pleased to present the trio of saxophonist-flutist Doug Horn, vibraphonist Cary Kocher and bassist Kurt Krahnke for our next free Sesi Motors "5:01 Jazz Show" on Friday, March 6th.  Music starts promptly at 5 and goes until 7 - a great time to celebrate with jazz-loving friends after work.

The pub, Rush Street, is the location at 314 South Main Street in Ann Arbor. Known for their gifted mixologists and comfortable setting, Rush Street is also a great location for "5:01 Jazz" with plenty of parking nearby.

Between the three veteran musicians there is nearly 120 years of professional music experience.  Leader Doug Horn studied at the University Of Miami, Florida and performed on cruise ships.  That is why you hear a Caribbean flair in many of Doug’s original songs.  Doug Horn has performed with many jazz greats including Brother Jack McDuff, Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, Jimmy Forrest and his mentor, Phil Woods.   Vibraphonist Cary Kocher is one of Michigan’s most respected vibraphone and mallet instrument technicians.  He provides and repairs the vibraphones heard at the Detroit Jazz Festival.  Cary has performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival many times and has recorded with The Easy Street Jazz Band, Bess Bonnier, The Keller-Kocher Quartet, Dave Bennett’s Benny Goodman Tribute Band and the Latin jazz quintet, Los Gatos.   Bassist Kurt Krahnke is also a member of Los Gatos with Cary Kocher and has appeared at The Detroit Jazz Festival.  Kurt has provided strong bass lines for Ron Levy, The J.C. Heard Orchestra, The Sun Messengers, Tad Weed, Sheila Jordan, Barbara Morrison, Sean Dobbins, Paul Vornhagen and many others.

Doug Horn, Cary Kocher and Kurt Krahnke are inspired by the groundbreaking trios led by Benny Goodman, Red Norvo and Lionel Hampton.   As all three are respected music teachers, they bring an encyclopedic understanding of jazz standards and the great American songbook.   A key aspect of this trio is fun.  The musical quotes they trade back and forth as well as their ease with and love for listeners is readily evident.  Get ready to snap fingers, clap hands and chuckle along with The Doug Horn Trio on Friday March 6th at Rush Street.    "5:01 Jazz" is WEMU’s free jazz series presented on the first Friday of the month in October through May in memory of our first major donor, Dr. Jan Winkelman.

Linda Yohn simply cannot remember a day in her life that was not filled with music. Her early life was full of changes as the daughter of a well-respected cancer research scientist who moved his family about, but one thing was constant: the love of music instilled by her mother. So, when it seemed life was too hard to bear, young Linda would listen to her radio, play her guitar, dance her heart out and sing at the top of her lungs. So, it isn’t so strange that “older” Linda still does all those things!
