Ann Arbor Police Making Staffing Assignment Changes to Improve Efficiency

The Ann Arbor Police department won't be getting any new officers in January. But, a couple of assignments are changing.

Adding overtime work to increase time spent on traffic enforcement won't be the only change coming in the New Year for the Ann Arbor Police Department.  Several police officers are being re-assigned partly as a result of the electronic patrol logs the department started using a year ago.

Police Chief John Seto explains that the logs monitor how much time officers spend on various assignments daily.  Seto adds that the changes are an effort to be more efficient with current staffing levels.  He says over time and with additional categories the electronic logs should be even more useful.

Re-assignments coming in January include adding a new police officer to the traffic unit and one more for the crime strategy unit.  Two additional police officers will be assigned to the 4 PM to 4 AM swing shift.

City Council last week also approved $125,000 of overtime work specifically to be focused on traffic enforcement.
