Bettye LaVette back on top of WEMU "Sweet 16"

Former Detroiter Bettye LaVette has always defied description and categorization.  While many of her contemporaries followed the dictates of their record label or management, Bettye forged her own identity.  There was always a dark edge to Bettye's voice - even in her early R&B sessions such as "My Man - He's A Lovin' Man", recorded when she was 16 years old.

Nearing 67 years of age,  Bettye has lost none of her emotional intensity and ability to communicate the truth of her songs.  She remains a compelling and dynamic live performer.  That is why WEMU hosts got behind her show November third at The Ark with airplay for "Thankful N' Thoughtful", their appreciative commentary and deserved respect for Bettye LaVette.
