Candidate Info: Donna Lasinski, Michigan State House

Public domain

WEMU offered the opportunity for any candidate appearing on a ballot in Washtenaw County in the 2018 general election to submit a campaign message directly to our audience. Donna Lasinski is running for Michigan State House as a Democrat.  What follows are the audio and remarks the candidate wanted to share with you.

Hello, I am State Representative Donna Lasinski. I serve the 52nd House District which includes the communities of Whitmore Lake, Dexter, Chelsea, Manchester, Saline, and the 14 townships in the western ⅔ and northern border of Washtenaw County. Serving in my first term, I’ve taken a moment to reflect on all the things we’ve accomplished together and to consider: what am I most proud of? For me, it’s the thousands of conversations we’ve had as a community that have shaped my priorities in Lansing. I’ve listened at hundreds of community events, knocked on over 10 thousand doors, and responded to over 5000 emails that have been sent to my office. I’m ready to keep working on the issues we care about most.

So what are those issues? What have I heard about over the past two years? I have heard over and over again: “Protect our drinking water.” “Strengthen our schools.” “Fix our roads!” and “I need affordable health care.”

So what did I do in my first term?

I’m proud to have accomplished stricter clean-up standards for our drinking water, because too many of us are living under the threat of dioxane. I’ve also co-sponsored legislation nearly a year ago to set safe, clean standards for our PFAS contamination clean-up. We’ve seen and heard nearly every week a new warning-- “do not eat the fish”, “do not touch the foam”-- all in our local lakes and in our beautiful Huron River. This cannot be allowed to continue. For our roads, I voted for the funding we need to fix our roads for the long haul without raising taxes-- $500 million in extra funding over the next 15 months to get some work done. Along with my colleagues for health care, I rolled out the Health Care Bill of Rights to make sure pre-existing conditions are always covered and prescription drug prices are lowered. And for our schools, I voted against sending your taxpayer dollars to for-profit cyber charter schools depleting the funds available to our traditional public schools.

But how do you know this is all happening? How do you know the work going on in Lansing? Well I want to make sure that you do. And I have fought for accountability passing a government transparency bill unanimously on both sides of the aisle so that you can see how our work is done in Lansing. We’ve made so much progress in my first term for our communities and families here in Washtenaw County, both yours and mine. But we can’t afford to take our foot off the gas. That’s why I’m running for re-election. On November 6th, please vote for me, Donna Lasinski for State Representative. I am a strong voice for you in Lansing.
