Concerns Over Main Breaks Continues With Cold Weather

The bitter cold is back for another round in Southeast Michigan, raising concerns about more water pipe breaks. Ann Arbor has seen a high number of water main breaks this winter already.

Larry Sanford is the Assistant Manager of the Ann Arbor Water Treatment Plant. He says the water main breaks happen due to certain conditions, such as shifting of the ground and deep penetration frost.

Sanford says there is not much they can do right now prevention-wise, but the department is ready to fix any breaks that might occur.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
