In-District Parents Can Have School Of Choice, Too

Great programs, district-wide, give parents plenty of choices.

Ann Arbor Public Schools are, once again, opening 750 schools-of-choice seats for the upcoming year, but the initial focus is with students living within the district.

Currently, about four percent of students in Ann Arbor schools come from outside the district. The percentage isn't likely to grow much, but there could be plenty of students choosing which building in which they will attend classes. Superintendent Jeanice Swift hopes families within the district understand they have choices. Swift asserts there are "a lot of great program offerings, and our students are welcome across any of those offerings." Swift states this is why in-district students will be the primary focus.

The in-district schools of choice window runs from January until March. The district will then open remaining seats to students from outside the district in April and May.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
