Eastern Michigan University announced layoffs and other cuts to help balance its 2017 fiscal year budget

10-staff  members are being laid off and 40 vacant positions on campus were eliminated.  The university refused to verify what positions were included in the layoffs.  Geoff Larcom is a spokesperson for Eastern.

"Well, I can't give an overall money figure. What was involved was enough of a reduction--5% from each department--to bring this year's budget into balance, given other factors, such as tuition and enrollment projections."

Some departments like Public Safety did not see any cuts.  Faculty positions were unaffected.  As of now, Larcom says no further layoffs  are expected.
