EMU Won't Renew Inkster School's Charter In 2015

Eastern Michigan University won't renew its charter with an academy in Inkster when it expires in June.  The university says the decision not to renew Gaudior Academy's charter stems from concerns about the school's effectiveness as a public school academy.

Malverne Winborne directs EMU's Charter Schools Office

He knows this will pose a challenge for students, family, faculty and staff.

"We don't take this lightly," Winborne says, "and when we see that our schools are having challenges we try our best to work with them.  But at some point we have to make a decision as to what's in the best interest of the families in those communities."

Gaudior Academy is a K-8 school, and was the first of EMU's 12 chartered schools.

Winborne says EMU is keeping a close eye on three other schools: the Academy for Business and Technology in Melvindale, and Hope Academy and Commonwealth Academy in Detroit.
