Kenyatta Wilbourn Snapp is charged with conspiracy and bribery in a kickback sceme with an after-school tutoring contractor.
U.S. District Attorney Barbara McQuade announced the charges against Snapp and two others today.
Snapp was employed by the Education Achievement Authority as a principal for Denby and Mumford High Schools in Detroit. EAA Chancellor Veronica Conforme said in a statement that the district is satisfied that those responsible are being held accountable.
Conforme's full statement,
"After months of collaborating with the FBI, we are satisfied that those responsible are finally being held accountable. I commend the EAA staff and outside reviewers who brought these issues to light and reported them to the authorities. While this is a learning moment for the EAA, we cannot let it distract us from our greater mission of ensuring all children succeed.”
Earlier this week an evaluation of the EAA's progress in turning around low-performing Detroit schools was submitted to the Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents. The evaluation was conducted by EMU faculty members. It concluded that the EAA district made no progress in four areas outlined by the Board.
On Tuesday, the Board postponed a voteon whether the university will continue to partner the EAA in an interlocal agreement.
