Should Michigan's energy future include more nuclear energy? That's the topic in this week's Issues of the Environment.  Jeff Alson is a volunteer with the group, "The Alliance to Halt Fermi III."

Listen to why that group is working to stop DTE Energy from moving forward with a another proposed nuclear generating station.

Overview

*   In February of 2015 the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s staff has recommended that DTE Energy be granted a combined operating license for the proposed Fermi 3 nuclear power plant.
*   Although some consider nuclear energy to be a renewable source, there are many arguments to the contrary and plenty of reason to fear nuclear waste contamination of the Great Lakes and areas surrounding them if Fermi III is constructed.

*   Jeff Alson is an environmental engineer from Ann Arbor and a volunteer with the Alliance to Halt Fermi 3. He has studied nuclear energy issues for 30 years; he sees nuclear energy as a non-solution to energy shortages. In addition to believing nuclear energy too risky, Jeff feels the construction of Fermi III is unneeded and will will eliminate more investment in renewable sources of energy.
