It's That Time Of The Year: Beware Crossing Deer

Humane Society of Huron Valley

Now that we're in to October, it's time for the annual reminder about being on the lookout for deer on area roadways.

Deer are on the move in October and November, according to the Humane Society of Huron Valley, as it is their mating season.

Humane Society president Tanya Hilgendorf says drivers need to be extra-alert this time of the year, as the season prompts different behavioral changes in deer, which can lead to more deer-car collisions.

Dawn and dusk are when deer are more apt to be busier, and if you see one, expect more to follow.

Motorists are advised to use their high beams when possible and slow down.

While a deer's vision isn't great, their hearing is better, so it's suggested to honk in short bursts if you see a deer near the edge of the road.

And as always, don't veer if an animal jumps in front of you while driving.

Apply the brakes, keep your hands on the wheel, and come to a controlled stop.
