The campaign to expand equal protection rights in the state constitution to include women and LGBT people can start collecting petition signatures.

A state board gave its OK to the petition form, so the campaign will start gathering signatures with an eye toward the 2016 ballot.  The Fair Michigan amendment would add protections against discrimination based on gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation.  Fair Michigan attorney SteveLiedel say those protections belong in the state constitution.  “Where those rights can’t be tinkered with or taken away by politicians," Liedel says.

The state constitution can only be amended by a vote of the people.  The equal protection clause currently offers anti-discrimination protections based on religion, race, color, or national origin.
