The economy, roads, education, and insurance were the issues last night at a political debate on Mackinac Island between six Republicans and Democrats running for governor.
The candidates appeared before a crowd of the state’s political and business leaders at the annual Detroit Regional Chamber Policy Conference.
The candidates had to winnow their positions down to sound bites on a crowded stage, but tossed out opinions on how to bring down insurance rates and fix pothole-pocked roads.
Candidates don’t so much win debates as survive them, and there were no knockout blows.
Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, and state Senator Patrick Colbeck were the Republicans onstage. Former Detroit health director Abdul El-Sayed, former legislator Gretchen Whitmer, and businessman Shri Thanedarwere the Democrats.
