Scammers are targeting more residents in Washtenaw County in a phone call scam.

Washtenaw County Sheriff's spokesman Derrick Jackson says there's been an increase in reports from residents of scammers posing as sheriff's deputies.

"Residents have been calling us letting us know that they're getting a call from someone in the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office saying that you're taxes are past due and that you need to pay by debit card over the phone right away, or they'll be sending the deputy out to make an arrest. Obviously, these are scams."

Jackson says the sheriff's office will never call and demand any type of payment over the phone.  He urges Washtenaw County residents to report scam calls to police.
