Sexual assault and domestic violence remain serious problems in Washtenaw County, and Safehouse Center is preparing its upcoming "Men Taking a Stand" campaign to help stop them.

The campaign's goal is to raise awareness within the community and encourage more men to take an active role in preventing it.

The center's Executive Director Barbara Neiss-May says people underestimate how often domestic violence and sexual assault happen.

"In Washtenaw County alone, there are at least 1,700 calls to 911 for police every year related to domestic violence," Neiss-May says.

Neiss-May says more than 5,000 people experiencing sexual assault or domestic violence receive assistance from the the Safehouse Center each year.
