No longer our own Southeastern Michigan Secret, Sean Dobbins is set to make the national release of his album "Journey" on the Detroit Music Factory Records label.
I spoke with Sean just before his appearance at our Sesi Motors 5:01 Jazz show. He explained how the CD is a journey through songs that shaped his early life and took on greater meaning over the years.
While Sean hopes that his profile will rise through this national re-release of the CD, Sean has no plans of leaving the community of Ypsilanti-Ann Arbor and Detroit that has shaped his musical persona. He made that point perfectly clear as he listed the many educational duties he takes on today.

Drummer Sean Dobbins has been a huge favorite of WEMU listeners and staff since his days as a high school student jamming at The Bird Of Paradise Jazz Club. He is now one of the Detroit area’s most in-demand jazz educators and entertainers. When he released The Journey by his organ quartet a little over a year ago, it was a staple on the WEMU playlist.
Thanks to Detroit Music Factory Records, jazz fans all over the world will get in on our little secret: Sean Dobbins is a beautiful drummer with a big sound and an even bigger heart. Friday, October 2nd is when The Journey is released nationally. The Journey is Sean Dobbins’ story in song. It is his hope that your musical journey will be on a parallel, swinging course.
