SOS Community Services To Offer 'Parents As Teachers' Program

soscs.org

Ypsilanti parents with kids up to five years old can now get some help making sure they're ready when they hit school age.  S-O-S Community Services is launching a program called Parents as Teachers.

Rhonda Weathers is Executive Director of S-O-S Community Services

She says the program pairs families with Parent Educators, who come into the home to "play work" with families.

"Teaching parents how they can best interact with their child to help them develop and meet the developmental milestones," Weathers says.  "They'll be doing 'ages and stages' questionnaires on a quarterly basis with all the children in the family who are under the age of five to make sure that they're on track developmentally."

The Parents as Teachers program will help up to 45 families a year, thanks in part to a $30,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.

Weathers says families will be identified at Ypsilanti Housing Commission sites, and through the Emergency Shelter and Rapid Re-Housing systems.
