Students, Staff At Eastern Michigan University Push To Halt Privatization Of Dining Services

Faculty, staff, and students at Eastern Michigan University want to halt a plan to privatize dining services on campus.

Union representatives and students have started a petition to postpone a vote by the Board of Regents that will outsource dining services to a private vendor. The group says the change is not in the best interest of the school.

In a written statement, the group claims a contract with Chartwells will put the jobs and safety of EMU employees and students at risk. Last year, The Washington Post reported the company settled a $19 million lawsuit with public schools in D.C. over problems with food supplied by Chartwells.

Faculty and students will hold a press conference at 5 PM Tuesday at the Halle Library.
