Sustainable Buildings Forum To Offer Tips To Keep Heating Costs Down

Creating a sustainable home can save money in the long-run.

Cold winter temperatures generally lead to higher energy bills. A forum on sustainable buildings will offer tips on keeping down heating costs.

Making your home more energy efficient by cutting down on the amount of heat that escapes is a way to create a more sustainable building. Ecology Center Healthy Buildings Director, Jason Bing, says a home energy auditor can create a comprehensive list of upgrades. Bing thinks most homeowners can handle at least one project on their own. Bing stated in an interview "increasing attic insulation [is] an easy upgrade [...] for a handy DIYer."

Bing says homeowners, and renters alike, can reduce their heating costs through good window treatments, and using a programmable thermostat.

The Sustainable Ann Arbor series starts Thursday night at the Ann Arbor District Library downtown branch.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
