Local non-profit agencies are working to make sure everyone in the county has a thanksgiving meal to enjoy. At least one organization has seen more requests for food assistance in recent months.
Community Action Network has distributed over 180 turkey dinners to low-income families across WashtenawCounty. But, it's not just holiday meals that are needed.
Deputy Director Derrick Miller has worked at the Bryant Community Center for the last six years and has seen a big change in demand for food. "We were seeing a little less than about 100 visits a month for food. We are currently just shy of 600 visits per month for food," Miller says.
A recent spike in demand started this summer, as visits for food have risen by close to 200 a month.
Miller believes there has been pent up demand and people are finally accessing the food now that CAN is receiving more donations and has sped up the distribution process.
The Thanksgiving turkey dinners have already been shared but donations are being accepted for the upcoming holiday season.
