A University of Michigan emergency alert Wednesdat morning about a gunman on campus turned out to be a pair of Reserve Officer Training Corps members. UM police are taking several steps in light of the incident.
Navy ROTC members with gear and what looked like an assault rifle entering the Chemistry Buildingcaused a witness to contact police. After not being able to immediately resolve the situation an emergency alert was sent across campus but following a search of the building an all clear message was released.
Police Chief Robert Neumann says they hope to avoid confusion from this type of incident in the future. "We're in contact with our ROTC and working with them. They are very interested in the safety of our community and so we're working closely with them to review protocols," Neumann says.
Members of the campus community who receive the alerts by text message received the warning before those contacted through email. Neumann says after any incident where an emergency alert is released the department reviews the system. He says the technology is out of their control, and some people may have even seen the all-clear message before seeing the initial alert.
