The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs has awarded $9.65 million in grants to various cultural groups in the State.

Groups in Washtenaw County received a total of $891,055, the third highest amount in the state of Michigan. This was approximately a 19% increase from previous year's total of $749,984 to fund arts and cultural programs in the area.

Deb Polich,  President of the Arts Alliance in Ann Arbor, explains to WEMU that the funds do a lot more than promote the arts. They also helps the local economy by creating jobs and attracting tourists to the area.

Polich added that the funds will help Ann Arbor compete with other cities such as Grand Rapids and Ludington that are also known for their art scene.

The Arts Alliance was awarded $78,300

  • $13,000 for regranting administration costs
  • $22,500 for program operational and projects support
  • $1,500 for professional and organizational development
