The state of Michigan this month issued, then expanded, a “Do Not Eat Fish” advisory for portions of the Huron River.  It cited unusually high levels of PFAS in the fish it tested.  PFAS are a compound of chemicals known to cause cancer and other medical issues.  In this week’s “Issues of the Environment,” Huron River Watershed Council executive director Laura Rubin dispels some misconceptions about the advisory and discusses the concerns the contamination raises for the present and future health of the river.

As home to one of the nation’s largest populations of Middle Eastern immigrants, the Detroit area is a natural destination for refugees fleeing violence in places like Syria.  But the leader of the largely suburban county that neighbors the city has called for a stop to refugee resettlements and has threatened to go court.  That has become a hot issue in the race for Oakland County executive.

Voters in Washtenaw and three other counties will decide the Regional Transit Authority proposal  that, if approved, would create a mass transit system in Southeast Michigan.  Their goal is to make the region more connected and accessible. Whether that is of benefit to local businesses is a matter of opinion.

The Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan has unveiled its new master plan for a rapid public transportation system.

The proposal calls for expanding rail and bus systems and connecting Washtenaw, Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties.

I talked with the Executive Director of Metro Matters and Washtenaw County Commissioner Conan Smith about what this could mean for the community.
