In this week's installment of Issues of the Environment, WEMU's David Fair talks with Jesse Tack of Ypsilanti about the growing local food movement in Ypsilanti.
Food Forests, as they're called are popping up in greater numbers, in part thanks to the group Jesse Tack founded called, Abundant Michigan, Permaculture Ypsilanti, or AMPY.
A food forest is a gardening technique or land management system, which mimics a woodland ecosystem by substituting edible trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals. Fruit and nut trees make up the upper level, while berry shrubs, edible perennials and annuals make up the lower levels. Food forests projects have grown out of the permaculture and local food movements.
