The state Legislature re-convenes this week to hash out a solution to the Detroit schools’ looming financial collapse.
The Detroit Public Schools have been under state emergency management for the past eight years, which has failed to solve the district’s fiscal woes. The district is half a billion dollars in the red and about to default at the end of June without a bailout.
The state Senate and the state House have adopted competing plans. The differences include money for starting up a new school district to teach student while the old one assumes the debt, how to handle charter schools that are falling short of academic goals, and punishing teachers and their union over sickouts that have sporadically shut down most of the city’s schools.
