Jorge Avellan

News Reporter

Jorge is an Emmy Award winning journalist who has more than ten years of experience covering Metro Detroit.   He started his career with the Spanish language television network Univision in Texas.   After an Univision executive saw him over a television news feed he was offered a job as a television news reporter in Detroit Michigan.  A few years later he moved on to English television, also in Detroit.   Jorge has covered every big news story in the last decade in Detroit from presidential visits, bankruptcy, city hall scandals, Super Bowl, World Series and of course the North American International Auto Show.  He also once flew inside a Red Bull Air Race stunt plane reaching speeds of up to six G-forces.   But his favorite stories to cover are people stories, the ones that residents get to tell their stories. Jorge is now thrilled to be reporting for 89.1 WEMU.  Email him him story ideas or tips!

Passion and politics. Development versus preservation.  Controversy, divisiveness, and even litigation.  All of it surrounds a relatively small parcel of land in downtown Ann Arbor.  What happens next with the so-called “Library Lot” will be decided on November 6th.  89.1 WEMU’s Jorge Avellan has more on Ann Arbor’s Proposal A.

Ypsilanti Community Schools / ycschools.us

On November 6th, Ypsilanti Community Schools voters will decide a district request for funding through a new tax levy.  This is a “sinking fund” proposal.  It is somewhat different from an operating millage or bond issue request.  What’s the difference?  How would the Ypsilanti schools use the money, if approved?  89.1 WEMU’s Jorge Avellan went looking for those answers.

Voters in Ypsilanti are used to seeing their candidates run as Democrats.  That’s not the case this time around.  When the November 6th general election rolls around, voters in the city will find that four of the five candidate options for mayor are running as independents.  89.1 WEMU’s Jorge Avellan wanted to find out why that is.  And, along the way, the candidates helped define some of the issues that drove them to run.

The mid-term elections are about a month away, now. Typically, turnout for mid-terms is much lighter than in presidential election years. This year, the political climate is tense and polarized. That appears to be manifesting itself among younger voters with a new sense of interest. In looking at Washtenaw County, if newly registered young voters turn out, it could help determine outcomes in November.
