89.1 WEMU

Jorge Avellan

News Reporter

Jorge is an Emmy Award winning journalist who has more than ten years of experience covering Metro Detroit.   He started his career with the Spanish language television network Univision in Texas.   After an Univision executive saw him over a television news feed he was offered a job as a television news reporter in Detroit Michigan.  A few years later he moved on to English television, also in Detroit.   Jorge has covered every big news story in the last decade in Detroit from presidential visits, bankruptcy, city hall scandals, Super Bowl, World Series and of course the North American International Auto Show.  He also once flew inside a Red Bull Air Race stunt plane reaching speeds of up to six G-forces.   But his favorite stories to cover are people stories, the ones that residents get to tell their stories. Jorge is now thrilled to be reporting for 89.1 WEMU.  Email him him story ideas or tips!

Have you ever played with a toy, remote-controlled car?  Would you want to do it if the vehicle was the size and weight of the vehicle you drive? And, you were riding in it?  People are doing that right now, right around the corner from you. What they learn may determine our transportation future. By now, you’ve likely heard of the American Center for Mobility. The testing site in Ypsilanti Township once housed the historic Willow Run bomber plant in the World WAR II era.  It later served as home to The General Motors Power Train plant from the 1950’s until it was closed in 2010.  89.1 WEMU’s Jorge Avellan has taken a peak behind the curtain to get a look at what may, one day, be considered history-making technology.

Eastern Michigan University

For the past eight years, Eastern Michigan University has been working with girls in Metro Detroit to spark interest in the STEM field.

Late Thursday afternoon, Eastern Michigan University responded to demands made by students, faculty and staff earlier this week.  The demands were presented to President James Smith as a result of staff layoffs and the elimination of four sports programs.  The university decided to move forward with those actions as part of budget cuts.

For as long as we’ve had settlements and communities, firefighters have been at work to protect residents in times of emergency.  While at first, citizens and neighbors volunteered to help douse a blaze when needed, formal fire departments with paid employees were developed and the commitment to serve has only grown.  Through generations, fire departments, and the equipment they use, have undergone an evolution.  89.1 WEMU’S Jorge Avellan explored that history, as you can, when he visited the Michigan Firehouse Museum in Ypsilanti as it celebrates its 20th anniversary.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we take a close look the role women played in establishing some of the public libraries in Washtenaw County.  This history is extra special for one district library in particular this year.

As the Washtenaw County Road Commission continues to clear trees from several roads where there have been serious accidents, a Dexter woman staged a protest there Monday morning hoping to stop the over 200 year-old tree from being cut down.  Hours later, she was gone, and all that remained was a big stump and tree debris.

The Washtenaw County Road Commission is using a federal safety grant to cut downs trees in Dexter.  The goal is to create a ten foot safety zone for drivers on Mast Road and North Territorial.  But as 89.1 WEMU's Jorge Avellan tells us, some residents oppose the project.
