A trip to Ann Arbor's Farmers Market, a walk along the Huron in Gallup Park, and a trip to the pool at Veteran's Memorial Park could all become smoke-free experiences.  The Parks Advisory Commission has recommended these and other parks should go smoke-free.

A total of 77 Ann Arbor parks are included on the list Parks Advisory Commission is submitting to City Administrator Steve Powers. In April, City Council passed an ordinance to ban smoking in outdoor places and gave the city administrator the authority to ban smoking in parks after consulting with PAC.

Chair David Santacrocesays they chose the 73 parks with playgrounds and the four parks within the Downtown Development Authority boundaries. He says it was a common sense first step."Put this ban in place.  Let it go for a year.  Let's measure its effect.  Right, and then we'd happily engage you again about whether smoking should be banned in further parks," Santacroce says.

The ordinance calls for a civil infraction if a smoker refuses to stop immediately upon being requested by a police officer. A $25 fine or community service is the penalty.

City Administrator Steve Powers will consider the recommendation and signs will be posted in parks he agrees should be smoke-free.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
