Ann Arbor Students Observe Yom Kippur At Sunset Tonight

When the sun sets tonight, many members of Washtenaw County’s Jewish community will observe the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur.

At the University of Michigan’s Hillel, Rabbi Lisa Stella and others at the center want students and staff to not feel far from home during the holiday. Yom Kippur at Hillel begins with a meal before a day of fasting and services is observed from sunset Tuesday until sunset Wednesday.

Stella says services for reformed, conservative, and orthodox Jews differ when observing the holiday, but  the message of Yom Kippur remains the same. She says the holiday is about “Thinking about forgiveness, thinking about change from wrongdoing we’ve done in the past year and this sense of atoning and starting over.”

Those who want to attend Yom Kippur services at Hillel will need to sign up on their website michiganhillel.org.
