The union for Ann Arbor public school teachers has ended a ban on working with Eastern Michigan University student teachers.
Beginning next school year, EMU student teachers will again be welcomed by all Ann Arbor teachers to work in the city's public schools. The boycott was enacted by the Ann Arbor Education Associationas a response to EMU’s affiliation with the Education Achievement Authority.
AAEA President Linda Carter says the decision to lift the ban was made after the university's Board of Regents (BOR) voted to end a partnership with the EAA. “When they [BOR] took that action, we felt we needed to reexamine our boycott of EMU students," she says.
The union voted unanimously to renew ties with the university during a meeting last week.
Eastern Michigan University College of Education Dean Michael Sayler says the decision is great news. “We think we’ve prepared some of the very best teachers around," he says. "This is one more wonderful way to get us back out into the schools.”
Sayler says ending the boycott will make it significantly easier for Eastern Michigan University students to find a classroom internship closer to campus.
The university’s ties with the failed Detroit district will officially cease in June 2017.
