State Attorney General Bill Schuette and Michigan State Police DirectorKristeKibbeyEtuehave announced that $1.7 million will go toward processing Michigan's nearly 2,000 untested rape kits. Law enforcement agencies in Washtenaw County are responsible for more than 100 of them.

Out of the 102 untested rape kits in Washtenaw County, Ann Arbor Police have 65, Ypsilanti Police have 30, and Eastern Michigan University Police have 7.

Barbara Niess-May is director of SafeHouse Center, an advocacy group for sexual assault survivors. She says a new process for tracking rape kits will be tested in Washtenaw County.

Last year, Wayne County and UPS began a partnership with the goal of tracking rape kits through the investigative process.
