Ann Arbor's Tech Center Burns Down

Ann Arbor – Demolition crews today will knock down what's left of the old, Ann Arbor Technology Center. Investigators will wade through the rubble in an effort to determine the cause of the blaze.
The fire at Third and Washington,on the city's west side, began about seven Thursday evening. Firefighters from Pittsfield Township and the City of Ypsilanti joined Ann Arbor's seven units in combatting the blaze. Since demolition on the buildings had begun earlier this month, fire crews took a defensive posture and simply worked to containt he blaze and protect surrounding residents and properties.
Fire Inspectors will be joined by Ann Arbor Police and members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms today in trying to determine the cause of the fire.
The Tech Center site has been abandoned since July first, when the last tennants were evicted. It had been used by a variety of artists, musicians and dancers, some of whom were discovered to be living there earlier this year. The Third and Washington site will next house the new Ann Arbor Y-M-C-A.
