One local community is taking an unconventional approach to documenting its history.
Ypsilanti residents are being encouraged to take pictures and record everyday life in their neighborhoods this weekend for a project called Document Ypsilanti.
But instead of sending them to a historian or collecting them in an archive, they'll be posted to social media using the hashtag #DocumentYpsi2017.
Local blogger Mark Maynardcame up with the idea. He says he wanted to build a "communal time capsule" that anyone could look at.
"Things are always changing and I think we all think back 10, 15, 20 years ago and try to remember what was there, and I think it’s just something that resonates with people like ‘Oh yeah, it would be great if we had this community repository,’” Maynard says.
Maynard says if it proves popular, he could try doing something like this again in subsequent years.
