Chelsea School District And City Of Dexter Proposals Among General Election Ballot Issues

Wiki Commons

The Chelsea School District and the City of Dexter each have a proposal that voters will see on the November 3rd general election ballot.

Chelsea School District is asking voters to renew a six-year, 18-mill that generates about $5.3 million a year.  The operating millage, which was first approved in 1993, is non-homestead and does not tax a family’s primary residence.  Instead, businesses, agricultural property and properties that fall under the second home category are taxed.  Julie Helber is the district superintendent and explains what could happen if the millage is not approved.

Superintendent Julie Helber: Because the operating budget is really primarily used to pay our staff salaries, this could have a pretty devastating effect.

Meanwhile, voters in Dexter will decide if they want to place restrictions when it comes to selling or leasing public property.  That includes a 2/3 approval from city council and the majority of city electors for real estate and equipment sales.  Any leasing of public property for more than three years would also be subject to a referendum.
