Today is the deadline for companies to bid on the chance to conduct a study on the safety of an oil-and-gas pipeline that that runs beneath the Straits of Mackinac

Some environmental groups say the 62-year-old EnbridgeLine Five pipeline poses a risk to all of the Great Lakes.  AndreaBitely is the press secretary for Attorney General BillSchuette.  He co-chaired a task force last year that called for the study.  She says the study will look at whether there are better ways to ensure the region can get the oil and gas it needs.

“And we are in the process of reviewing alternative options for Line 5 as well as determining the risk.”

Enbridge Energy says the underwater pipeline is well maintained, and it’s a safer alternative to using trucks and freighters to deliver oil and gas to northern Michigan.
