It's a busy time of year for package deliveries, but 89.1 WEMU'S Lisa Barry reports on one recent special delivery at the Detroit Zoo.

Several crates were recently delivered to the zoo via FedEx and inside were penguins.  20 “Gentoo” penguins which will be part of the under construction Polk Penguin Conservation Center expected to open in April.

The ten females and ten males were shipped to the Michigan zoo from the Sea World aquarium in San Diego. The swimming penguins were shipped in 4-by-4-foot plastic crates, punched with air holes and fitted with a block of ice on the bottom.

They are currently being held in a special area of the Penguinarium, which, at 33-thousand feet, is expected to be the largest penguin facility in the world.
