Eastern Michigan University Helping Girls Get Interested In STEM

Eastern Michigan University

To help spark interest among girls in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, Eastern Michigan University will host a conference on April 22nd called "Digital Divas."

Five hundred high school girls from Metro Detroit will learn how to create their own mobile applications and about graphic design.  Those are just a couple of the skills they will learn.

EMU technology management professor Pam Becker says only 25% of computing jobs are held by women.

When it comes to cyber security and information assurance, that number is even lower at 10-12%.

Becker added that girls just don't see enough woman role models in the STEM field, so they're trying to change that with the conference.  Event organizers say that, after participating in the event, many girls choose STEM as a career path.
