Eastern Michigan University Honors Veterans

emich.edu

Tuesday is Veterans Day, and Eastern Michigan University is honoring those who served with an open house at the school's new Military and Veterans Resource Center.

The center will offer guidance, counseling and veterans services to those who qualify, as well as a lounge area, a meeting room and several computers.

Mike Wise is EMU's Assistant Director of Veterans Services. He says the school has a significant number of students affiliated with the military.

"Today with the post 9-11 G.I. Bill as Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines they can also transfer those benefits to their dependents," Wise says.  "And so we have a lot of students who are actually not military, but they're affiliated or related to or dependents of those veterans or military members."

Wise says they had records for around 1,500 students affiliated with the military going into the 2014 school year and another 500 have been verified since then.

Tuesday's open house runs from noon to 5 p.m. in Pierce Hall.
