Next month Eastern Michigan University's Regents will review the school's connection to the Education Achievement Authority created to turn around the state's worst schools. Student government wants the university to cut ties with the EAA.
That's because student leaders believe Eastern's contract with the EAA is hurting students on campus. The resolution calling for EMU to terminate the contract highlights reduced student teaching opportunities, a decline in College of Education enrollment, and recent education alumni having difficulty finding employment.
Student Body President Desmond Miller is hopeful the regents will act. "Worked with several of them for a number of years now, and I would say they are very, very receptive of students and especially when students and faculty are on the same page," Miller says.
Miller says data shows many students are doing worse academically in EAA schools than before the take-over.
The regents meet December, 5th and Chair Francine Parker has promised the issue will be on the agenda.
