A day after Eastern Michigan University faculty passed a no confidence resolution in the Board of Regents (BOR), Republican state lawmakers say the EAA will soon be dissolved.

State Senator Arlan Meekhof told the Detroit News that a new funding bill for Detroit Public Schools will abolish the Education Achievement Authority (EAA).

Eastern Michigan University student leaders say the Board of Regents should still be held accountable for continuing a partnership with the EAA, even if the district is dissolved.

Steven Cole is EMU Student Body President, Steven Cole says:

“It's encouraging now to see that the legislature might be changing the landscape of the EAA, but it's disappointing to me that the university leadership from the Board of Regents wasn't strong enough to get out of the agreement that was hurting our university before the legislature has to fix it for us."

The Student Body passed a resolution last year urging the Board of Regents to end the school’s involvement with the EAA.

A member of EMU Faculty Senate, Professor Rob Carpenter explains that, no matter what happens, the actions of the Regents have hurt the university.

Carpenter goes on to explain to WEMU news:

“The fact that those actions demonstrated a violation of their (BOR) own code of ethics, that doesn’t change whether or not the EAA is dissolved by the legislature.”

Faculty Senate members are expected to vote later this month to censure Regents Mike Morris and Mary Treder Lang over their roles in the EAA.
