EMU Faculty Unions Protest Budget Cuts, Parking Privatization, Athletics Spending

Eastern Michigan University’s professor’s union held a rally on campus Thursday to protest budget cuts and the school’s plan to privatize its parking services.

Around a hundred students, staff, faculty and other community members gathered in front of Welch Hall, urging EMU officials to instead make larger cuts to the school’s athletics department and administrative staff.

Dr. Phil Cardon attended the rally and is a professor at EMU.

“We’re concerned that money keeps being poured into the sports when we really should be looking more at putting money into academics because that’s what EMU should be about,” says Cardon.

Geoff Larcom is a spokesman for the university.

“These budget cuts are being administered equally around the university,” says Larcom.  “They affect all aspects of university, including athletics.”

Larcom says athletics has already trimmed several positions and will continue to be a part of the discussion moving forward.
