Enough Singatures Collected To Put Minimum Wage Proposal On Ballot

A campaign to raise the minimum wage in Michigan has collected enough signatures for a ballot drive being threatened by Republican legislation.

Raise Michigan announced Tuesday it collected more than 250,000 signatures needed for a measure to appear on the November ballot to raise the minimum wage from $7.40 to $10.10 by 2017.

Organizers say they'll keep collecting signatures until the deadline at the end of the month despite legislation recently introduced by Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville that could thwart their efforts. Richardville's bill would repeal the existing minimum wage law and enact a new one, rendering moot the ballot initiative to amend current law.

Raise Michigan spokeswoman Danielle Atkinson says organizers are consulting lawyers about responding to Richardville's bill. She says they still aim to collect 360,000 signatures.
