The University of Michigan’s Maize and Blue Cupboard has seen an increase in food assistance demand before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Keith Suster is a spokesperson for the Maize and Blue Cupboard and says the need for food assistance increased from 116 students last week, to about 400 this week. Suster says about 70% of the people who are currently using their service are international students.
Keith Suster: COVID and all of the warnings around traveling have really kept some students here in the Ann Arbor area.
Meanwhile, the Swoop’s Food Pantry at the Eastern Michigan University provided food assistance to 115 students during the last week. That’s a decrease from 204 from the previous week. They attribute the change to a decrease in the number of students currently living on campus. Both the U of M and Eastern pantries are closed for the rest of the week.
