Getting Up Close With An Iconic American Animal, The Bison

Every day thousands of motorists pass by a field of Bison (or Buffalo if you prefer) near a busy intersection on the north east side of Ann Arbor outside Domino’s Farms.

I had a chance to tour the field and get close to these amazing iconic animals:

There are 90 Bison roaming the grounds outside the Domino’s Farms Office Park on the north east side of Ann Arbor.  The Bison herd was first cultivated in 1993 to compliment the design of the building created in the renowned Prairie style of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Bison there now, range in age from one month to 18 years old and some weigh close to two thousand pounds.  The Bison aren’t aggressive, just protective and could charge if they feel someone is on their turf or may hurt their family.

Several of the Bison at Domino’s Farms are taking to shows to be just for “best in show” just as a dog or horse would be.   Herd manager Todd Crocker says the Bison can hear at “subsonic levels” even following each other by the sounds of their digestive tracks!
