New research shows a link between an increase in LGB civil rights and a decrease in hate crimes.

Stony Brook University doctoral student Liz Coston researched the issue after receiving a grant from Eastern Michigan University’s Equality Center. She found that violence against the LGB community decreased in the wake of civil rights advances like the legalization of same sex marriage.

The findings don't reflect incidents of Violence against transgender people, especially those who identify as women of color. Hate crimes against the transgender community have risen in recent years.

Coston will present her research tonight at 5:30 PM at EMU’s Student Center.
