Health Systems Struggling As COVID-19 Pandemic Continues

Wikimedia Commons

Health systems across Michigan are facing layoffs and mounting expenses as the COVID-19 crisis continues.

The Beaumontand Metro Detroit health systems both announced this week they are laying off hundreds of employees who are not directly involved in treating patients.

Other systems are also struggling.  Rob Casalou is the president and CEO of Trinity Health Michigan, which includes the St. Joseph Mercy Health System.  He says it will likely be a while before they’re able to recover.

"Honestly, we’re probably going to be suffering severe losses for the next few months.  I think even the public needs to gain confidence to come back to the health system.  They’re safe, but this has been very upsetting to our community,” Casalou says.

The St. Joseph Mercy Health system reports it’s lost between 50 and 60 percent of its revenue since the pandemic began and has been furloughing 10 percent of its staff since April 1st.
