Housing Washtenaw County's Homeless Putting A Strain On County Budget

The Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners continues to consider options to house the homeless during the coronavirus pandemic.

Commissioner Andy LaBarre says, currently, between $700,000-$800,000 are being spent a month on housing the homeless at hotels and other facilities.  He says it will be a main topic of discussion during tonight’s Board of Commissioners meeting.

"The challenge is the traditional congregate setting of a place like Delonis or rotation shelter. For public health reasons, you can’t be essentially packing folks into relatively confined areas in large numbers"

The county is working with community partners to help address the issue.
