New / old school soul sensation James Hunter tops WEMU’s Sweet Sixteen with Minute By Minute from March 18th through the 24th. It’s been five years since Hunter released a new CD.
The time may not have been kind to him (his wife, Jacqueline died from cancer in 2011), but he’s returned with a survivor’s attitude and the lyrical depth only earned from experiencing life’s ups and downs. While Hunter’s supple, whiskey husky voice is front and center, the ace band backing him up for the past six years add to the authentic sweet soul sound. And given the sound – with production from Gabriel Roth and Bosco Mann – architects of the Daptone sound – it had to be a WEMU listener and staff favorite. Our final recommendation for Minute By Minute is for the genuine emotions expressed in Hunter’s original tunes. Minute By Minute by James Hunter is a disc to savor for hours and hours.
