National Health Service Corps Is Bringing Doctors To Washtenaw County

National Health Service Corps

The National Health Service Corps is helping bring in doctors to medically underserved areas of Washtenaw County through a special program.

Dr. Victoria Nichols is an osteopathic physician at the Packard Health Clinicin Ann Arbor.  Through a Students to Service Loan Repayment Program, Dr. Nichols will get about half of her student loans paid for.  In return, she will work for three years at the clinic.  It's a way to get doctors to one of Michigan's 826 medically underserved areas.  Dr. Nichols says people are always surprised to hear that Ann Arbor falls into that category.

"A lot of patients traditionally do not have access to doctors just because of their income or because of not being able to get to a bus to get to the university system or to get where doctors are located."

Local students in their last year of medical school can apply for this program by clicking here for more information.

Dr. Nichols added that, when she graduated four years ago, the debt for many students was about $200,000.
