Nessel, Other AGs, Challenge Emissions Rule Rollback

Michigan joined 22 other states and the District of Columbia Wednesday in filing an environmental protection lawsuit.   As we hear from Rick Pluta, state Attorney General Dana Nesselwants to preserve fuel economy standards set during the Obama administration.

Michigan’s auto companies are split on whether to support the new rules that roll back emissions standards for cars and trucks.  The new federal rules set less ambitious goals to boost fuel economy.  Attorney General Nessel says the standards should remain as they were because they’re good for the environment, and they’re good for the state’s auto companies and suppliers.

“These companies need to compete in a global market, and that’s a market that is increasingly recognizing the great importance of fuel-efficient vehicles.”

Nessel says the previous, tougher standards would also help mitigate climate change.  The region is already experiencing effects such as flooding and other severe weather events.
