A new program offers owners of small rental properties in Washtenaw County low interest loans to make energy efficient upgrades.

The A2 Energy Loan Fund is available for one to four unit rental housing properties.

Ann Arbor Sustainability Associate Jamie KidwellBrix says 30 percent of the city's rental housing is older converted single family residences that can use upgrades. "Air, ceiling, insulation, upgrades to heating and cooling, anything that really improves the energy efficiency of a rental housing unit," Kidwell Brix says.

Estimates show about $50 million in energy costs are spent on rentals in the county's urban core, so a 10 percent improvement would save $5 million.

Details on the program can be found here.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
